UK-Nigeria Tech Hub Social Innovation Driven Entreprenuership Accelerator Program for Nigerians

The UK-Nigeria Tech Hub, an initiative of the UK Government’s Department for Digital, Culture, Media, and Sports (DCMS), has launched applications for a social impact accelerator program to boost the growth of the Nigerian technology ecosystem.

The program is specifically targeting startups from 6 Nigerian states, which include Edo, Adamawa, Kwara, Kaduna, Enugu and Osun.

The Country Director of the Hub, Oyinkansola Akintola-Bello, announced the opening of the applications in a statement released on Thursday.

She disclosed that selected applicants would undergo bespoke 16-week in-person and virtual training from local tech hubs and business leaders.

According to Akintola-Bello, the training was designed to equip applicants with the expertise needed to scale their impact while remaining profitable.

    Access to resources

Highlighting other benefits of the program for the startups that would be selected, Akintola-Bello said:

    • “The UK-Nigeria Tech Hub partnered with NINE, ‘insert about NINE’ to launch an impact accelerator, ‘Social Innovation Driven Entrepreneurship’ for social impact entrepreneurs. Those selected will join the UK-Nigeria Tech Hub founder pipeline and gain access to resources and network.
    • “In addition, they will undergo a bespoke 16-week in-person and virtual training, from local tech hubs and business leaders, designed to equip them with the expertise needed to scale their impact while remaining profitable.”

Akintola-Bello added that the initiative would support inclusive and sustainable economic growth and jobs, build high-end digital skills, and forge innovation partnerships between Nigerian tech sectors and international businesses.

She said that in the build-up to the accelerator, NINE and Kaduna Business School had developed a challenge brief to identify market and sector-specific gaps in health, climate change, education and food security affecting underserved populations in six pilot states in Nigeria.

    • “This collaboration to scale social impact innovations underscores the UK’s commitment to nurturing brilliance in underserved regions, ensuring that every idea, regardless of location has the resource and support required to scale, she added.

    Stimulating innovation beyond Lagos, Abuja

Also speaking, the Chairman of NINE, Mr Bankole Oloruntoba, said there was a need to stimulate the emerging city-based innovation ecosystem in Nigeria beyond Abuja and Lagos.

    • “This program is focused on these emerging state economies to stimulate the entrepreneurial economies as well as create job possibilities using digital tech,” Oloruntoba said.

About the Deloitte One Young World Scholarship

Today’s increasingly complex global challenges necessitate collaborative efforts to create a better, more sustainable future for both people and the earth.

One of the most pressing of these challenges is the climate crisis. The IPCC’s most recent climate report has shown that we require urgent transition and change across all sectors and systems to secure a climate-resilient, liveable future for all. It is now more crucial than ever that we find and develop collective and innovative solutions to tackle climate change and meet the Paris Agreement.

In securing the future of the planet, however, we must also ensure that it is a future in which the next generation is equipped to meet the challenges that will come with it. Investing in education and skills is key to empowering individuals, nations, and societies to face the challenges of tomorrow. However, millions of people around the world are held back by educational inequality, with 800 million youth today not predicted to have even the basic skills to succeed in the workforce by 2030.

At Deloitte, we believe we have a responsibility to build a better, more sustainable, future within which every individual is empowered, uplifted, and able to achieve their full potential. Through our strategic initiatives, WorldClass and WorldClimate, we are respectively committed to expanding opportunities for 100 million people globally by 2030, as well as addressing climate change, both within our organisation and beyond.

As a longstanding partner of One Young World, we’re proud to support the Deloitte One Young World Scholarship 2023 which will enable 5 outstanding young leaders to attend the One Young World Summit in Montreal, Canada on 18 – 21 September 2024.

This scholarship is intended for young leaders focused on tackling these challenges, by either reducing the causes and effects of climate change, or improving the education, skills, and access to opportunities, in their communities, countries, or the world at large.

The scholarship is seeking candidates who have demonstrated commitment to:

    • Create, scale, or support efforts that reduce carbon emissions
    • Reduce the negative impacts of climate change through technology, activism, community programs, policy, nature-based solutions, or other similar efforts
    • Empower individuals within the community or around the world to take climate action
    • Plan and strategize around reducing climate change-related natural disaster impacts and strengthening resiliency

    Or:

    • Improve access to education, skills, or employment opportunities for those that may be left behind by the rapidly changing global economy. For example, women and girls, and disadvantaged youth.
    • Create skills development or lifelong learning opportunities for people to prepare for the future workforce, including in areas where there are talent shortages.
    • Accelerate entrepreneurship, new types of employment, or provide opportunities for people to overcome traditional barriers to employment.

    Scholars will receive:

    • Access to the One Young World Summit 2024 in Montreal.
    • Travel restrictions permitting
      • Hotel accommodation in a private room between 18 and 21 (inclusive) September, 2024
      • The cost of travel to and from Montreal (economy class)
      • Catering which includes breakfast, lunch, and dinner (provided by the hotel and during the Summit)
      • Ground transportation between Summit venues
    • Participation in Deloitte-hosted sessions for their delegation in the lead-up to and during the Summit, and a Deloitte “buddy”

    Deloitte One Young World Criteria

    • Aged 18 – 30
    • Nationals of all countries will be eligible to apply for this scholarship, but projects must be based where Deloitte has a presence
    • Evidenced commitment to delivering positive change
    • Demonstrated capacity for leadership
    • Understanding of key local and/or global issues
    • Track record of generating impactful and innovative solutions to address either climate and environmental challenges, or education and skills-based challenges

Most delegates are between the age of 18 and 30. The One Young World team will consider applications from those who are older than 30, pending demonstration of appropriate personal impact, initiative, and willingness to engage. We are not able to accept applications from those who will be aged under 18 at the time of the Summit.

The Nigeria Startup Portal is now opened for applications: Here’s what you need to know about the program.

The Nigeria Startup Portal is a portal opened by the Federal Government to unify, empower, and support startups in Nigeria as part of the startup act that was signed into law.

The Federal Government has launched an engagement portal to register startups in the country as part of implementing the Nigeria Startup Act.

The Minister of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy, Dr Bosun Tijani, announced this Tuesday night. The portal will also be used to engage with Venture Capital companies, hubs, and innovation centres, according to the Minister.

This development is coming a year after the Startup Act was signed into law by the immediate past President Muhammadu Buhari.

    The Portal (Nigeria Startup Portal)

Announcing the Nigeria Startup Portal via a post on his X handle, the Minister said:

    • We are pleased to announce the launch of the Startup Support and Engagement Portal, startup.gov.ng, a key requirement for implementing the Nigeria Startup Act. The startup portal will drive the identification and aggregation of Nigerian startups, venture capital companies, hubs, and innovation centers in order to facilitate engagement and support for ecosystem players.
    • The launch of the portal will allow us to initiate the process of setting up the startup consultative forums to select representatives to the National Council for Digital Innovation and Entrepreneurship, in order to facilitate discourse and consensus among Nigerian ecosystem players.
    • We invite all Nigerian startups venture capital companies, hubs, and innovation centers to register at the portal startup.gov.ng and look forward to working with all industry stakeholders to ensure that we fully implement the Startup Act for the benefit of our innovation ecosystem.

Eligibility for the Nigeria Startup Portal

To be eligible for the Nigeria Startup Portal, your startup must meet the following criteria:

    1. Be a limited liability company registered under the Companies and Allied Matters Act (CAMA).
    2. Be a company existing for less than 10 years from the date of incorporation.
    3. Have objects that are focused on innovation, development, production, improvement, and commercialization of a digital technology innovative product or process.
    4. Be a holder or repository of a product or process of digital technology or the owner or author of a registered software.
    5. Have at least one-third of local shareholding held by one or more Nigerians as founder or co-founder of the startup.
    6. Satisfy the conditions set out in the Act, in the case of a sole proprietorship or partnership.
    7. Be a tech-enabled business that uses existing tools, platforms, libraries, and frameworks to make a company or a solution more efficient or effective.

What you should know About the Nigeria Startup Portal

Former President Buhari signed the Nigeria Startup Bill 2022 into law on October 19 2022 to put an end to the legal uncertainties that had trailed the startup industry in the past.

It provides for what qualifies a company to register and obtain startup status. The Act stipulates among others that:

    • Before a company can be labelled a startup for the Nigeria Startup Portal, it must obtain a certificate known as the startup label. This means that only companies with the startup label will be recognised as startups.
    • It mandates that a Startup Support and Engagement Portal should be established to facilitate the issuance of the startup label and also bridge the gap between regulators and startups. It also spells out the requirements for a company to obtain a startup label. Companies issued with a startup label have obligations under the bill and failure to comply with these obligations can revoke their startup label.
    • According to the Act, for a company to be named a startup for the Nigeria Startup Portal,, it must be a registered limited liability company that has been in existence for not more than ten years from the date of incorporation, amongst other requirements.
    • Startups of the Nigeria Startup Portal, can access a special seed fund created under the Act. The Act establishes a Startup Investment Seed Fund, which is designated for startups alone. It will provide finance and tech relief for startups. This means increased access to funding that will grow the startup ecosystem. It will be easier for startups to fund their operations by leveraging the grants and loans that will be available to them.
    • Companies labelled as startups will benefit from some tax reliefs and incentives under the Act. These labelled startups are eligible for pioneer status incentives and other tax reliefs. Labelled startups with at least ten employees where 60% of the employees have no prior work experience within three years of graduation or any vocational program have access to percentage-based tax relief.

U.S. Institute of Peace Generation Change Fellows Program |Fully-funded

The Generation Change Fellows Program works with young leaders all over the world to encourage collaboration, resilience, and capacity as they transform their communities. It is a collaboration between the United States Institute of Peace (USIP) and the University of Southern California’s Center for Religion and Civic Culture.

Generation Change Fellows Program in Guatemala

USIP is pleased to announce that our next Generation Change Fellows Program will take place in Guatemala. The program will take place between the end of November and the beginning of December 2023.

    Generation Change Fellows Program Background

With over 1.2 billion people across the globe below the age of 35, young people have the opportunity to be powerful agents of change. However, as they navigate the difficult transition from adolescence to adulthood, they can be tempted by external parties or ideologies and hindered by corruption, high unemployment rates, and discrimination, sometimes being drawn into violent extremism or electoral violence.

Even the most dedicated young leaders face challenges and burnout as they work to create change. They often work in isolation, or lack the knowledge, skills, and resources to maximize their efforts and increase their personal resilience. USIP developed the Generation Change Fellows Program (GCFP) to counter this isolation through a family-like community of practice, to augment the existing knowledge and skills of participants through mentorship and training, and to partner with them in community-led peacebuilding initiatives.

GCFP carefully selects small cohorts of dedicated peacebuilders aged 18-35 through a highly competitive application process. Tackling some of the world’s most difficult challenges-from countering violent extremism to enhancing gender equality-these Fellows hold leadership roles within their local communities. The program is currently active in Africa (Egypt, Morocco, Tunisia, Somalia, Sudan, Kenya, Uganda, and Nigeria) and the Middle East (Jordan and Yemen).

The 24-month Fellows Program—which includes access to Global Campus courses for ongoing learning—provides these young civic leaders with the following skills and experiences:

    Conflict Management Skills

Developing the core conflict management skills of active listening, relationship building, negotiation, mediation and dialogue and working cooperatively to find mutually agreeable solutions among parties.

    Leadership Development Skills

Providing emerging leaders with practical skills in communication, leadership presence, and story-telling to help them articulate their vision and mission more effectively and create healthier, more stable organizations.

A Dynamic Community of Civic Leaders

Creating lasting relationships built on trust so that Fellows are able to turn to one another for advice and assistance both digitally and in person.

    Participatory Action Research (PAR)

U.N. Resolution 2250 places youth at the center of the peacebuilding agenda. The Generation Change program has launched an initiative to build the capacity of Generation Change Fellows to facilitate community-based, participatory research to increase the voice of youth in local and national peacebuilding efforts and policymaking.

The Peaceworks publication “Participatory Action Research for Advancing Youth-Led Peacebuilding in Kenya” documents six Generation Change Fellows’ work with PAR in their communities. This work is further documented in the short film, “When Youth Build Peace: Participatory Action Research in Kenya.”

The Generation Change Fellows Program is implemented in partnership with USC Center for Religion and Civic Culture.

Generation Change Fellows Program in the Pacific Islands

USIP is delighted to announce that the application for the Generation Change Fellows Program in the Pacific Islands is now open. The program will focus on training youth leaders (ages 18-35) from the Pacific Islands, who have experience in peacebuilding, in a 5-day training on prejudice awareness and reduction, effective leadership and conflict transformation.

The training will take place in March, 2024 in Fiji. The deadline to apply is Thursday, November 30th, 2023 at 11:59pm EST. To apply, please visit the application form.

  • 3MTT List of Successful Candidates (How to Check If you’re Shortlisted)

3MTT List of Successful Candidates (How to Check If you’re Shortlisted)

33MTT has produced a detailed list of successful candidates for the 3MTT program’s first round. MTT List of Successful Candidates – How to Find Out If You’ve Been Selected

Candidates that have been shortlisted can check this list to learn if they have been selected.

Before we begin, it is important to note that this is only the first batch of instruction. Nothing to worry about if your name does not appear on the list.

For this first batch, only 30,000 candidates are shortlisted. Why so?

    Here’s why:

NITDA is employing a strategy called 1-10-100 in training candidates. What this means is that, the first batch will train 1% of candidates, then they will go ahead to train 10% of the candidates. And then finally they will train 100% of candidates. Hence, 1-10-100.

Since the target number of candidates to train is 3 million, 1% of 3 million is 30,000. so this first batch will train only 30,000 candidates.

For the next batch, 3MTT will shortlist 10%, which will amount to three hundred thousand candidates (300, 000). If you’re not on this batch, hopefully, you’ll be on the next.

Even so, if you’re not on the next batch, be rest assured you’ll be on the third batch where NITDA will deploy heavy resources to train the remaining candidates

    3MTT Shortlisted Candidates Status Assessment

The Nitda 3MTT Dashboard Will Display Your Only Shortlist Status As Follows:

1). Shortlisted: You have been chosen to move on to the next round of the 3MMT selection process if the message “Shortlisted” appears on your dashboard.

Please take note that you could be required to take a Computer Based Test (CBT) at a designated date. You will be informed of this by email or through your dashboard, depending on how you registered.

2). Under Review: If “Under Review” appears on your dashboard, it indicates that management is reviewing the application you successfully submitted. After the review, it will finally read “Shortlisted” or “Not Selected.”

3). “Not Selected”: If “Not Selected” appears on your 3mtt dashboard, it indicates that your application was rejected for a variety of reasons, such as failing to satisfy the requirements or the fact that all of the available spots were taken. You might be automatically enrolled in the program’s next round, or you might need to reapply when registration for the following batch starts.

Interpreting the 3MTT Shortlisted Status Indicators:

The status indicators on your 3mtt dashboard provide valuable insights into your application’s progress:

    • “Shortlisted”: If your status is “Shortlisted,” congratulations! You have been selected for further consideration and may be invited to the next stage of the selection process.
    • “Under Review”: If your status is “Under Review,” your application is still being evaluated by the selection committee. Continue to monitor your dashboard for updates.
    • “Not Selected”: If your status is “Not Selected,” unfortunately, your application was not selected for this round. However, you may be eligible to apply for future 3MTT programs.

    FAQs:

What if I forgot my 3mtt dashboard password?

Click the “Forgot Password” link on the login page and follow the instructions to reset your password.

What if I have questions about my 3MTT application status?

Contact the 3mtt support team through the provided contact channels or email [email protected] for assistance.

What does it mean if my application status is “Under Review”?

An “Under Review” status indicates that your application is still being evaluated by the selection committee. Please allow sufficient time for the review process to conclude.

What if my 3MTT application was not shortlisted?

While not being shortlisted may be disappointing, it does not necessarily reflect your overall potential. The 3MTT program is highly competitive, and various factors contribute to the selection process. Encourage yourself to continue pursuing your tech aspirations and explore alternative opportunities.

When will I receive updates on my application status?

Application status updates are typically provided through email notifications and on the 3mtt dashboard. Stay informed by checking your email regularly and accessing the dashboard periodically.

How can I check my 3MTT application status without logging in?

Currently, checking your application status requires logging in to the 3mtt dashboard. However, NITDA may introduce alternative methods in the future.

UN OHCHR Minorities Fellowship Programme 2024 (Fully Funded to Geneva)

The Minorities Fellowship Programme (MFP), which began in 2005, is OHCHR’s most comprehensive training program for human rights and minority rights defenders from national or ethnic, religious, and linguistic minorities.

By the end of the MFP, the fellows should have a comprehensive understanding of the United Nations system, international human rights treaties and mechanisms in general, and those related to minorities in particular. Fellows should also be able to train others in their communities/organizations.

The Programme further serves as an opportunity for human rights activists working towards the protection and promotion of minority rights to expand their partners’ base. They do this by building a strategic dialogue with fellow activists from across the globe, the United Nations, and relevant Geneva-based NGOs, amongst other partners.

The Programme is offered in three linguistic components: English, Russian, and Arabic.

UN OHCHR Minorities Fellowship Programme Requirements

    1. The candidate must belong to a national, ethnic, linguistic or religious minority group (persons who do not belong to a minority group will not be taken into consideration, even if they have close links with minority communities and/or organizations).

Note: If your community identifies as indigenous, please do not apply to this programme but to our Indigenous Fellowship Programme. Please note that the Indigenous Fellowship is a separate programme and has different application forms and deadlines.

    2. Formal education should not be a limitation to participation in the Minorities Fellowship Programme, if relevant experience can be demonstrated.
    3. Candidates should have ability, willingness and possibility to train other persons belonging to minorities upon return to their respective communities/organizations, and should agree to do so.
    4. Candidates must have good working knowledge of the language in which the programme is imparted.
    5. The candidate should be proposed—and his/her candidacy supported—by his/her organization and/or community. It is desirable that the sponsoring organization
      •    has a firm constituency or membership in the minority;
      •    is representative of minority issues;
      •    undertakes work on minority issues; and
      •    is composed of persons belonging to minorities.
    6. The overall goal of the Minorities Fellowship Programme is to offer persons belonging to minorities the opportunity to gain knowledge and skills in the field of international human rights in order to assist their organizations and communities in protecting and promoting human and minority rights. Therefore, it is important that the candidate proposed and nominated by a minority organization or community be someone who will return to his or her NGO to work in this field.

UN OHCHR Minorities Fellowship Programme Benefits

The MFP takes place in Geneva, Switzerland. Fellows are entitled to:

    • a return ticket (economy class) from the country of residence to Geneva;
    • basic health insurance for the duration of the Programme; and
    • a stipend to cover modest accommodation and other living expenses for the duration of the Programme.

How to apply UN OHCHR Minorities Fellowship Programme

Fellowship application forms are available in English | Russian | Arabic.

Both parts I and II of the application form must be filled in and signed. In addition, application forms need to be accompanied by an official recommendation letter from the nominating organization or community. Fellowship applications will only be taken into consideration if they are fully completed.

Interested candidates should submit their application indicating “Application to the 2024 Minorities Fellowship Programme” as subject either by e-mail* to ohchr-fellowship@un.org or by post to:
